Whenever servicing your fuel system or replacing a worn out pump be sure and replace the fuel filter.
Fuel Delivery System
- Fuel Pump: The fuel pump is responsible for delivering fuel at various rates and intervals to the injectors.
- Fuel Filter: The fuel filter is important and ensures the fuel that is being sent to the engine contains no particles that could clog the injectors.
- Fuel Injectors: Fuel injectors disburse the fuel when they receive the signal from the main computer.
- Fuel Pressure Regulator: As the name indicates, the fuel pressure regulator ensures the pressure is appropriate in order to maintain steady and smooth flow so the other components can perform at their optimum level.

Diagnostics
- Engine Diagnostics: Engine may run poorly in the early stages of fuel pump failure up to a no start condition.
- Sensory indicators: Smell of unburnt gasoline may be present.
- Engine warning light: In most vehicles, the engine warning light will luminate if there are DTC's present or pending.
- Check Fuel Pressure: If you have access to a fuel pressure tester and your vehicle has a schrader valve or access to a fuel line near the fuel rail you can check the pressure and compare to the manufacturer specifications.
Keep in mind
When the pump has given you signs that it is failing, bear in mind there are other possibilities that may only be masking the fuel pump as the culprit. Other possibilities could be any one of the other components within the fuel delivery system. To avoid replacing unneccessary parts thoroughly invesitgate smaller components first. In most vehicles although the check engine light comes on there is not a code that definitively states bad fuel pump. The codes are systematic and are only clues.
